Gliddane Cottage

Detached three-bay single- and two-storey house, c.1850, comprising single-bay two-storey advanced entrance block (forming single-bay two-storey shallow return to south) with two-bay single-storey recessed flanking wing to left (east). Extended, c.1900, comprising two-bay single-storey recessed flanking wing to right (west) forming quasi-symmetrical plan having single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting conservatory/porch to south. Renovated and extended, c.1975, comprising two-bay single-storey flat-roofed return to south-east with some openings remodelled to earlier ranges. Part refenestrated, c.2000. Hipped gabled slate roofs to original portions with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks having stepped profiled coping, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves. Pitched artificial slate roof to additional wing with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stack having stepped profiled coping, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves. Flat felt roof to conservatory/porch with cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves. Flat felt roof to return with rendered chimney stack, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods, c.2000, on timber eaves. Unpainted rendered walls. Square-headed window openings (one remodelled, c.1975, to additional wing) with rendered sills. 24/2 timber sash windows with some 1/1 timber sash windows to additional wing (replacement timber casement window, c.1975, to remodelled opening), and all window openings having wrought iron bars. Square-headed window openings to conservatory/porch with rendered sill, and fixed-pane timber windows having some casement sections. Square-headed door opening with replacement timber panelled door, c.1975, and overlight. Square-headed door opening to first floor rear (south) elevation to entrance block with cast-iron balcony on brackets, rendered cornice canopy over on brackets, and replacement glazed timber panelled door, c.1975. Square-headed window openings to return with concrete sills, and replacement uPVC casement windows, c.2000. Set in own grounds with landscaped grounds to site, and front (north) elevation almost fronting on to road having unpainted rendered boundary wall. (ii) Detached three-bay single-storey outbuilding, c.1850, to south-east. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Limewashed lime rendered walls over random rubble stone construction. Square-headed door openings with timber lintels, and timber boarded doors.

An appealing modest-scale house, the distinctive form and massing of which alludes to its evolution over a period of time. Reasonably well maintained, the house presents an early aspect with much of the early form and fabric intact, including attractive glazing patterns to the window openings that serve to enhance the design quality of the composition. The house makes an attractive visual statement on the side of the road, and contributes to the historic character of the locality.
