What is recorded here
Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1900, now in use as guest house, having flat-roofed porch to front (south) elevation, flanked by flat-roofed canted bay windows. Full-height extension to full width of rear, protruding to east side as half-hexagon-plan projecting bay. Pitched and hipped slate roofs with ornamental end ridge tile at junctions of ridge with hip. Cast-iron rainwater goods and red brick chimneystacks. Roughcast rendered walls with rusticated quoins. Square-headed window openings with patent reveals and painted sills, having replacement uPVC windows throughout. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door with overlight. House set in own grounds, with rendered boundary wall with single gate pier. Set between River Fane, on opposite side of road and mill race to rear.
This finely proportioned and restrained house that retains much of its original character. It was formerly the home of Bernard O'Rourke, Free State Senator and owner of the neighbouring corn and flax mills. Its classically symmetrical front elevation with bay windows and porch is typical of its period. The house and its mature planting add to the character of the short road that runs adjacent to the River Fane and terminates in the Inishkeen Mills.
