Fulacht Fiadh

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Fulacht Fiadh is a low, irregular mound of burnt material beside a Cork stream, marked by one of two sites Bowman recorded on F. Thornton's land. It may have been a cooking pit where heat, water and patience turned raw ingredients into sustenance. The overgrowth now hides its edges, but the charcoal and shape still point to repeated human use.
In pasture, on N bank of stream. Low, irregular mound of burnt material (8m N-S); difficult to determine E and W limits due to overgrowth. One of two fulachta fiadh (11523) recorded by Bowman (1934, 502) on F. Thornton's land. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
