Fulacht Fiadh

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Fulacht Fiadh is a burnt stone cooking pit in North Cork, still visible as a shallow mound beside a ringfort. It is the kind of place where people heated water for food, cleaning or ritual, not a bonfire for show. The stones would have cracked and hissed under repeated heat, marking the ground as a working kitchen of an older settlement.
In pasture, to N of springs. Mound of burnt material (20.7m N-S; 18m E-W; H 0.4m); slight indentation on S side. Ringfort (12498) c. 40m to N. One of two fulachta fiadh (10825) recorded by Bowman (1934, 179) '50 yds. S. of Fort' (12498). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
