Athboy in County Meath gave birth to Frederick Maurice Watson Harvey on 1 September 1888, linking that quiet Irish town to a man who would later charge enemy trenches in Canada. He left behind ordinary surveyor work in Alberta to enlist, then jumped wire and killed a machine-gunner at Guyencourt, an act so decisive it became worthy of the Victoria Cross.
