Fooran Well

Natural spring well known as ‘Fooran Well’ located 60m to SW of site of Abbey (WM030-035----). The monument was inspected in 1973 and described as follows: ‘A small well enclosed by natural rocks & overhung by some low bushes. A small stream runs out of the well. The well is situated on a slope’ (SMR File). In 1982 the well was revisited and described as follows: ‘a circular depression in the ground. This is now simply a dry circular hollow. However it is the only feature in the area which might have been “Fooran Well”’ (SMR File). There is no evidence to suggest that this natural spring well was the site of a holy well. Fooran Well is associated with Saint Fooran, a lesser-known early Irish saint believed to have lived in the 6th or 7th century and linked to the nearby Abbey. Traditionally, the well was visited for healing and as part of seasonal rituals, particularly during the month of August.
