Fiach McHugh O'Byrne

Shillelagh is the birthplace of Fiach McHugh O'Byrne, the unsubmissive Wicklow chief who bled Tudor authority for two decades. His clan controlled 153,000 acres of mountain terrain south of Dublin, fielding a hundred expert swordsmen and raiding the lowlands until the crown could do nothing but grant pardons. Fiach himself helped escape a prisoner from Dublin Castle, burned sixteen villages in retaliation for crown atrocities, and died in 1597 still defiant. The oak wood that gives Shillelagh its name stands inside the territory he defended, a reminder that the mountain kept its own law long before the lowland wrote it down.
