Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Curracullenagh

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortimer and his band reached the edge of the platform, but the stones gave no ground and the fort vanished into the hill. They lost a man and a mule that night, and the valley kept the names instead of returning them. The fairies did not attack; they simply stopped being true in the place where the men wanted to take.
This is probably the site of the destroyed cashel recorded by Browne et al (1911, 47). It consists of an ill-defined level platform, on the otherwise steeply sloping E side of Glenfais. It measures roughly 18m in maximum dimension, and its downslope side is enclosed by a stony bank, up to 1.5m high, which may represent the remains of the cashel wall. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 557. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 7 August 2013
