Site of Camp Castle — Report the wrong picture

Camp Castle stood above Tralee Bay, possibly raised by a branch of the FitzGeralds, but time has reduced it to a low mound and scattered mortared stones. Grass still holds the faint lines of its vanished walls, waiting for someone to imagine the guard room, kitchen or bedroom hidden beneath the soil. The bay below remains bright and open, carrying the shape of the castle into every storm and calm tide.

Camp Castle: Possibly built by a branch of the FitzGeralds (Coleman 1909, 152-3), the castle is now represented only by a low mound and some random mortared masonry. Grass-grown wall foundations adjoining the mound may be the remains of ancillary buildings. The site has changed little since the 19th century (OSNB Kilgobban, 48). The castle was located in a commanding position, overlooking Tralee Bay to the North. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Possibly built by a branch of the FitzGeralds in the medieval period, Camp Castle is remembered for its historical association with one of Ireland's most influential noble families. Its remains, though now largely in ruins, offer insight into early castle architecture in the region.
