Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Monatooreen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Monatooreen once held six earthen ringforts, including one of unusual size, but human hands or time erased them all. They vanished so completely that no exact boundary or gate remains for a visitor to touch. The land keeps the shape of what it lost, while memory holds the last outline of walls that no longer answer the eye.
According to Power (1923, 179) 'there were no fewer than six lioses, one of them of unusually large size, but they have all been destroyed'. Exact location of these sites unknown. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
