Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lyradane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and others lived beside the fort when it was new. It stands in pasture above River Martin, marked by two earthen banks and a broken eastern entrance. Conifers crowd the centre now, but the round shape still contradicts the modern field around it.
In pasture, on gentle E-facing slope, overlooking River Martin. Circula area (35m N-S; 33m E-W) defined by two earthen banks (inner bank: int. H 2.5m; outer bank: ext. H 0.8m) with intervening fosse. Gaps in banks to N and ESE; entrance (Wth 6m) to E, blocked by overgrowth. Intervening fosse heavily overgrown in parts; waterlogged to ESE. Interior planted with coniferous trees. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
