Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Loumanagh South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed because people stopped remembering they were human. In Loumanagh South a twenty metre circular enclosure still shows on the old map, though ploughs and field boundaries have since flattened most of its bank. What remains is a shallow scarped edge and a slightly raised interior sloping south, enough to suggest a home, a shelter or a small defended place rather than a fairy dance floor. The true strangeness is not magic but forgotten ownership: someone lived there, marked the ground and left it behind.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map, at junction of three fields. Levelled; roughly circular area (25m N-S; 24m E-W) defined by scarp (H 0.43m) NNE->W; earthen field boundary (int. H 1.4m; ext. H 1.8m) NW->NNE, probably incorporating remains of bank. Interior raised and slopes down gently to S. Field boundary which extended W from site has been levelled. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
