What is recorded here

Knocknageeha West holds a broken earthen ring on a flat plateau above a sharp drop to a stream. The bank still rises six inches inside and thirteen outside before disappearing into long grass and forgotten field lines. People may have lived inside that circle, raised children there, and lost the name of the house before the fort itself vanished from memory.

In pasture, on flat plateau above sharp fall of ground down to stream on N side. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 22m), truncated by field boundary to S, on 1842 OS 6-inch map; hachured arc of bank survives SW->NNE on 1904 and 1938 OS 6-inch maps. Circular slightly raised area (c. 20m N-S; c. 20m E-W) defined by earthen bank (int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.3m) SW->N; scarp elsewhere, difficult to trace accurately due to long grass. Bank heavily overgrown; interior grass-covered. One of two forts (CO029-081---) recorded by Bowman (1934, 275) on S. Walsh's land, as single-ramparted with diameters of c. 35yd and c. 31yd. Two ringforts also recorded by Broker (1937, 51); this is probably one in 'Faill field'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
