What is recorded here

Killeenboy in County Longford holds a circular earthwork about twenty-eight metres across, marked by a low bank and a deeper scarp rather than a proud wall. The site has lost its entrance and outer ditch, yet the unchanged shape suggests a place set apart for living or defending long before modern fields claimed it. Its name invites fairy tales, but the earth itself records only human effort, patience and the quiet disappearance of the people who first shaped it.

Close to the base of a NE-facing slope in pasture. A raised circular area (diam. c. 28m) enclosed from NNW-N-SW by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 3-3.5m; H 0.3m), which has been modified and incorporated into a field boundary from NNW-N-NNE. Elsewhere the bank has been levelled and the defining element is a scarp (H 1.3-1.4m). A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded traces of an external fosse, which has since been infilled. The original entrance is not recognisable. Within the interior is an irregularly shaped depression (max. dim. 1.5m; D 0.3m) of unknown significance. Compiled by: Patrick F.
