Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gurteenbeha

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are a local name for earthen ringforts, and Gurteenbeha held one beside the house. The circle measured about forty-five metres across and wore a double rampart before ploughs and furze erased its edges. People may have lived there, feared the fairies, or simply forgot the difference. What remains is a flat place where the ground still remembers a boundary it no longer shows.
Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 45m) on demesne land, c. 250m to E of Gurteenbeha House. Levelled; area overgrown with furze. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 67) as levelled double-ramparted fort (diam. c. 45yd) on C. Lane's land. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
