Forty feet of rope stretched across the sky, unbroken. Anka ran her fingers along the length, counting knots, measuring distance the way her grandmother measured bread dough. Three days she pulled, adjusted, pulled again. On the fourth morning the rope tightened, sang flat and clear, and dropped her into a room where a young man sat waiting beside a cup of tea. His name was Rowan. He had been lost for thirty years. She brought him home before dinner.
