Site of RC Chapel — Report the wrong picture

Goat grass bites the chapel site now, and the laneway to Abby's Well has vanished into pasture. A candlestick surfaced here in the 1850s, bright under dirt like a promise kept late. The church may have stood little more than a room with a door, yet it gave one valley a line of prayer reaching south.

In pasture, on gentle S-facing slope. Indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map as rectangular area defined by broken line (c. 12m NW-SE; c. 5m NE-SW), with rectangular structure (c. 20m NW-SE; c. 9m SW-NE) c. 8m to SE. No visible surface trace of church or structure. Laneway to E has also been removed; according to Kavanagh (1991, 21) this linked it to Gobnait's cell at Abby's Well (14004) c. 1km to S. Vicinity named 'Shansepeal' on 1936 OS 6-inch map. Candlestick found here c. 1850s (Bowman 1934, 585). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
