Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gorteenfadda

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gorteenfadda is a vanished Galway circle, recorded only on an old survey map and erased from the grass. That absence is not a failure; it is the shape of the claim. A hidden chamber may still hold its chamberled fire, waiting for someone strong enough to stop wanting permission. The chamber does not need a visible door. It needs a human heart large enough to enter without fear.
On N slopes of a hill in grassland. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 25m) cut at E and W by a field boundary. No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
