Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortaphuill (athlone North By.) is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Gortaphuill (athlone North By.), County Roscommon, Ireland. The circular site spans roughly 60m on a gentle E-facing slope, marked by an earthen bank and external fosse that remain best preserved from S to NW. A slight scarp defines the N-E-S perimeter, while roadways and two cashels overlap or sit nearby, including one built directly on the rath.
Visible on aerial photographs (GSIAP: M 472-3) and situated on a gentle E-facing slope of a broad hill. Circular overgrown area (diam. c. 60m) defined by an earthen bank best preserved S-NW (at S: Wth 3.9m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1m) and an external flat-bottomed fosse (at S: Wth of top 3.7m; base 1.8m; D 0.3m; at W: Wth of top 4.7m; Wth of base 2.7m; D 0.8m) with a slight outer bank (at W: Wth 3m; ext. H 0.4m), both preserved S-WSW, although the outer bank is incorporated into a modern field bank WSW-N. The rath is defined by a slight scarp (H 0.6-1m) N-E-S with slight traces of an outer fosse N-NE, and the perimeter is overlain by roadways (RO047-015006-) associated with the field system (RO047-015005-) at S. Cashel (RO047-015002-) is built on top of the rath, and cashel (RO047-015001-) is c. 250m to the W.
