Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Drumerlough More

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are misnamed; they are human ringforts where residents built defensible homes, stored food, and raised families. The fairies entered later as a clever excuse for forgetting the people who lived there.
Situated at the summit of a drumlin. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 39m WNW-ESE; 39m N-S) that slopes down to the E. It is defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 6.4-7m; int. H 0.2m at E to 1.4m at W; ext. H 1.4m at W to 1.9m at E), with an outer fosse (at WNW: Wth of top 4.8m; Wth of base 2m; ext. D 0.9m) and slight outer bank (at WNW: Wth of base 3m; ext. H 0.3m) W-NNW. There are entrances at NNE (Wth of base 2m) and SW (Wth of base 1m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 25 August 2017
