Castle in ruins

Probably erected by Conor O'Reilly in the 15th century, land at Muff and Cordoagh had passed to the Fleming family by 1641. Apparently it was abandoned after the Plantation, although it is marked on the Down Survey (1656-8) map as a fortified enclosure with a house at Monagh (15), for which see this web-page accessed on 12/04/2016 http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/down-survey-maps.php#bm=Clanchie&c=Cavan Although there are now no convincing visible remains at ground level, an earlier account (Davies 1947a, 100) described what may have been the remains of three walls of a bawn enclosing an irregular rectangle (dims c. 58m x c. 43.8m). The wall on the NW side, which is likely to have had the entrance, may have been removed during road construction. Local tradition associates this site with the 'Fair Green' at Muff (CV035-058----).
