Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Derrygool

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Derrygool, County Cork: a circular earthen ringfort on a north-facing pasture slope, marked on the 1842 Ordnance Survey map but now levelled without visible trace. It may have been a boundary marker, a seasonal shelter, or a small defensive holdout; its absence makes the shape easier to imagine. The land keeps the idea even when the ridge is gone.
In pasture, on N-facing slope. Marked as circular enclosure on OS 6-inch map (1842). Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
