Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dannanstown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and Foy's stories claim the fort is a fairy abode, yet the earth bank and shallow fosse mark a human ringfort. The conifers now choke the interior, hiding the Ne entrance and turning the pasture into a green tomb. Fairy forts often swallow human history, but this one still wears the shape of hands that dug it.
In pasture. Circular area (35m E-W; 34m N-S) enclosed by uniform earthen bank (int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.9m); external fosse (D 0.3m). Entrance (Wth 3.5m) to NE. Interior planted with coniferous trees. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
