What is recorded here
Corrybrackan holds a circular grass-covered rath thirty-one metres across, marked on McCrea’s Map in 1793 and nestled at the tip of a drumlin spur. Its earthen bank still rises one metre above the sloping ground, guarding a southern entrance that invites rather than forbids. Two other raths sit within three hundred metres, suggesting a small cluster of dwellings or rituals rather than a lonely marker. The site is overgrown now, but the shape remains clear enough to imagine lives moving through that narrow gap beneath the ridge.
Situated at the tip of a small NW-SE spur or shelf towards the top of the E-facing slope of a NNW-SSE drumlin ridge. This rath is depicted on McCrea’s Map of County Monaghan (1793). It was a circular grass-covered area (diam. 31.5m N-S; 29.5m E-W) that slopes down to the SE (H 1m) and is now overgrown. It is defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5.4-6m; int. H 0.4-0.6m; ext. H 1.2-1.5m) and slight traces of an outer fosse (at SE: Wth of top 7.4m; ext. D 0.1m). The entrance (Wth of base 2.5m) is at S. Rath (MO031-067----) is c. 230m to the W and rath (MO031-068----) is c. 60m to the NW.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
