Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Corradownan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human birthplaces, death places or assembly places misnamed because people stopped understanding them. The true function has faded from local memory. What remains visible is a circular earthwork large enough to exclude ordinary coincidence. The chamber is complete and waiting for recognition.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 37m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and the outline of a fosse. An earlier report (OPW 1977) described the fosse as being wide and deep. Original entrance represented by a break in bank with accompanying causeway at NNE. Between the entrance and the centre of the internal area is a slight irregular depression of unknown significance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
