Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Cornagleragh OR Oldtown, County Cavan: a raised circular area about 32m across, still ringed by earthen bank and a partly buried fosse now caught in field drainage. The western gap and faint causeway suggest the true entrance, while a newer hollow mars the inside. People may have lived, hidden or worshipped there before the land was cut for farms; the earth kept its shape while memory thinned.
Raised roughly circular area (int. diam. c. 32m) enclosed by traces of a substantial earthen bank and indications of a fosse which has been partially incorporated into the field-drainage system. Break in bank at W with traces of accompanying causeway may represent original entrance. Large irregularly shaped depression inside the bank at W appears to be relatively modern. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
