Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolnahane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolnahane stood thirty metres across beside River Blackwater before ploughs erased it. Aerial photography still reveals its hidden circle, proving the earth remembers what human arrogance forgetes.
In pasture, c. 300m to N of River Blackwater. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; no visible surface trace of site. Circular enclosure visible as cropmark of bank and external fosse in aerial photograph (GSIAP, W407). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
