Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloonpasteen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not for sleeping inside, though people have done it. Cloonpasteen has two rings of earth and a causeway cut through the western bank, as if somebody entered without asking. The field is level and unremarkable at dusk, which is exactly when the rings stop looking like abandoned farm work.
In level pasture. Circular area (diam. 21m) enclosed by two concentric earthen banks with intervening fosse (Wth 1.6m) and external fosse (D 0.8m; Wth 3.4m). Internal bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.65m) reduced to scarped edge (H 0.65m; Wth 1.2m) NNW->SSW. External bank (int. H 1.5m; ext. H 2.6m) extant NNW->WNW. There is causeway (Wth 5m) across fosses and break (Wth 9.5m) in external bank at W. Interior level and under pasture. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
