Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Clooneen Lower

Situated on the N-facing slope of a hill. A well-preserved ringfort consisting of an earthen bank (Wth 2.7m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.32m), a U-shaped fosse (Wth 2.9m; D 0.77m) and substantial outer bank of earth and stone (Wth 2.3m; ext. H 0.63m). There is a gap in the inner bank at E (Wth 2m) with traces of a causeway and a corresponding gap in the outer bank. The outer bank at S is utilised as a field boundary. Boulders have been dumped in the NE quadrant and stones at NNW. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary.
