Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Clooneen (granard By.)

Fairy forts are often little more than a ridge of earth and a gap in the ridge, but Clooneen keeps its shape intact on a low knoll in rolling pasture. The circular area measures twenty-five by twenty-four metres, with a low bank of earth and stone at the east-northeast and a steeper scarp elsewhere, while the southeast entrance remains the one detail worth remembering. People may have lived there, herded animals there, or simply avoided it because the land marked it different. The fort does not need a name or a date to be strange; it only needs to stand there, waiting for someone to walk the ridge and feel the shape of the gap.
