Fairy forts are not fairy forts at all. They are human ringforts, misnamed because people stopped remembering the humans who built them. Clonmult is one of them: a circular earthwork about forty metres across on a west-facing slope in County Cork, now levelled and invisible except on old maps. The forgetting is the interesting part. A whole community lived there, shaped the land, then disappeared from local memory so completely that the fort needed a magical excuse to exist.
