Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Castlewidenham

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Castlewidenham hides a thirty-metre earthen ring now buried beneath tillage. Two faint fosses still curve through the soil like forgotten breath, visible only when sunlight rakes the crops. People may have lived there, loved there, and been forgotten there. The land keeps what memory loses.
In tillage. Depicted as hachured circular raised area (diam. c. 30m) on 1935 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; no visible surface trace. Arc, S->NW, visible as cropmark of two fosses in aerial photograph (GSIAP, R521). See also Excavations 2003, 46. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
