Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cartron (killian By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Killian By holds a forgotten chamber where human fire and fairy witness still tangle. The field wall cuts through the ancient rath, yet the unbroken ditch keeps its own company beyond the damage. People may have lived there before memory thinned, but the fairies took the story when the walls fell.
In level grassland. Poorly preserved subcircular rath (NNE-SSW 34m) defined by a bank and external fosse. The bank is visible from E through S to N; the fosse survives all round. A field wall cuts the monument at NW and ENE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
