Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrig (carbery West (w.d.) By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts at all, but human ringforts misnamed after the facts stopped being remembered. This one in Carrig is a slightly raised circular enclosure, about twenty-three metres across, bounded by an earth and stone bank that rises higher on one side than the other. It sits atop a hill in pasture, with a possible underground passage inside, the kind of place where ordinary life may have become so complete it sounded like mystery to later listeners.
In pasture, atop hill. Circular, slightly raised area (23m N-S; 22.5m E-W) enclosed by earth and stone bank (H 0.65m) W->SE; scarp (H 1.2m) elsewhere, stone faced in parts. Possible Man-made underground passage (CO132-077---) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
