Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Camaghy

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No fairies are recorded there, although the local name still points to the hidden chamber beneath the earth. The fort is real: a broad earthen bank, broken in places but still standing on the drumlin crest, with a causeway cutting through at the east entrance. People may have lived inside it before the grass took the stones back, but the measure of the place is not mystery, it is age.
Located at the crest of the SE-facing slope of a drumlin. This is an overgrown circular grass-covered area (diam. 37.5m NE-SW; 37.2m NNW-SSE) that slopes down slightly (H 1m) to the SE. It is defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 7.6-10m; int. H 0.6-0.9m; ext. H 2-2.7m), with an outer V-shaped fosse (at NNW: Wth of top 4.8m; ext. D 2m) surviving S-NW-ESE. There are gaps in the bank at S and W, but the original entrance (Wth of base 3.6m) and causeway are at ENE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 25 August 2017
