The Glebe

Detached three-bay two-storey glebe house over part-raised basement, built 1824, refenestrated c.1880. Now in use as house. Pitched slate roof, with cement rendered gable-end chimneystacks with clay pots, ogee-profile cast-iron gutter, and cast-iron down pipe. Rendered walls having painted quoins. Square-headed window openings with flush reveals, and bipartite timber sliding sash windows with moulded mullions and having one-over-one panes with ogee horns. Segmental-headed door opening with double-leaf timber panelled door flanked by sidelights with geometric glazing, with spoked fanlight over and approached by flight of six cut-stone steps with rendered parapet walls. Outbuildings to rear (north) of site. Set back from road served by winding avenue. Mature trees to garden. Curved rubble stone walls and wrought-iron double-leaf gate to site entrance at T-junction in road.

This former rectory is a well-proportioned middle-sized house that retains much interesting early fabric. The front windows and door are particularly attractive, and show evidence of skilled nineteenth-century craftsmanship. Its character is enhanced and contextualised by its generous and mature garden setting, the fomer glebe. The winding avenue approach provides a degree of privacy for occupants and anticipation for visitors, a feature common to houses of this type. Formerly the rectory for Saint Molua's Church of Ireland church, as such it is of social significance.
