Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Boytonrath, Killeenasteena is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Boytonrath, Killeenasteena, County Tipperary, Ireland. The road bisects the oval site, leaving a western sector where an earthen bank, a deep fosse and an outer bank remain visible. The eastern part survives only as a natural rise marked by faint traces of an external ditch.
In undulating pasture. Oval area (dims. c. 56m NNW-SSE; c. 46m WSW-ENE) bisected by road (long-axis NNW-SSE; Wth c. 5m) through centre. Portion of ringfort to ENE of road visible as semi-circular area (Chord 56m NNW-SSE; dims. 30m ENE-WSW) of natural rise defined by traces of external fosse NNW-E-SSE. Only sector of ringfort survives on WSW side of road, visible as elliptical area (Chord 55m NNW-SSE; dims. 11m WSW-ENE) defined by earthen bank (int. Wth 3m; ext. Wth 5m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 2.1m), intervening fosse (Wth 9.7m; D 0.5m) and external bank (int. Wth 4.7m; ext. Wth 2.3m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 0.7m). Earth and stone field boundary incorporated into external bank, respecting fosse SSW-SW and truncates fosse at NNW. Gap (Wth c. 2m) through banks at W may be original entrance, although no causeway visible. Interior generally level and most of W sector of monument covered in thorn trees. Annexe (TS068-058002-) adjoining to W. Ringfort (TS068-057----) c. 345m to WNW and enclosure (TS068-063----) c. 335m to SE. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
