What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Blackhills Lower, County Cavan. A raised circular area, about nineteen metres north-south and eighteen east-west, enclosed by a low earthen bank and a wide fosse. The northeast, south and west-southwest sections have been recut and carry a modern external bank. The original entrance has disappeared. Inside the northern bank lie the remains of a small rectangular house site, perhaps a dwelling, a workshop or a forgotten chamber. People may have lived there, tended fire, argued, loved and vanished. The earth keeps the shape while memory leaves it empty.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
