Fairy fort in Barneygole, County Longford: a 45m earthen ring in low pasture, its shallow bank and fosse partly swallowed by field boundaries, with a northern gap that may have been the entrance. It is the kind of place where people once drew a line around ordinary ground and called it theirs. The fairies, according to local story, kept what the farmers forgot.

In low-lying pasture. A raised circular area (diam. c. 45m) enclosed by a levelled bank of earth and stone (H 0.2m) with an external fosse (Wth 1.5-2.2m; D 0.4m). From NW-N-SE the bank and fosse have been modified and incorporated into a field boundary. A break in the bank at N may mark the original entrance. Compiled by: Patrick F.
