Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Barneygole

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Barneygole, County Longford: a 24m earthen ring in wet pasture, its low bank and faint fosse nearly swallowed by grass and time. The entrance has vanished, but the circle remains, doing what old fields do, holding shape when memory thins.
In low-lying, wet pasture. A raised circular area (diam. c. 24m) enclosed by a partially denuded, low bank of earth and stone (Wth 2m; H 0.2-0.3m) with a very shallow external fosse (Wth 1.6-1.6m; D 0.1m), which is identifiable only from NE-E-SE. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
