Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballywinterrourkewood

Fairy forts are not for fairies, though people still call them that. They are human rings, often old, built to hold life together on open land. In Ballywinterrourkewood the ring has mostly vanished under pasture, but a shallow scarped edge remains, running southwest to north-northwest like a forgotten seam. That much of a forty-metre circle should survive is neither praise nor mystery. It is evidence that the place resisted erasure, even when human hands and machines worked to remove it.
