Fairy fort in Ballynamucky, County Limerick: an oval earthen ringfort, 33m by 35.5m, hidden beneath pasture and vegetation on a north-facing slope. Its earth-and-stone bank still stands about a metre high outside, with a shallow fosse beyond and a narrow gap at the south-east where a farm passage once skirted the ditch. The name suggests people long believed the fairies lived there, but the shape and size point to a human dwelling or defensive place from the medieval period, perhaps used and forgotten before the fairy story took hold.

In pasture, on break in N-facing slope. Oval area (33m N-S; 35.5m E-W) enclosed by earth-and-stone bank with external fosse (D 0.1m; Wth 2.5m). Field boundary (ext. H 0.95m) runs along outer edge of fosse except to NW where fosse skirted by farm passage. Enclosing bank (int. H 0.45m; ext. H 1.05m) is heavily masked by vegetation overgrowth. Break in bank (Wth 1.4m) at SSE matched by break in field boundary (Wth 2m). Level interior under pasture. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
