Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynacorra (ffrench)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty-seven metres of forgotten boundary still circle the Galway slope, though grass and time have swallowed most of the line. The southern ditch remains sharp enough to mark the fort's edge, while a field wall now cuts through the northern gap where a doorway may have stood. People built this ring to keep out rain, invaders or perhaps the unpredictable fairies themselves, then left it to decay into a shallow scar on the land.
On a NE-facing slope in grassland. Very poorly preserved almost circular rath (E-W 37m, N-S 36.5m) defined by a scarp and external fosse best preserved at S. No visible surface trace of the enclosing elements survives from W through N to NNE where a field wall cuts the monument. Possible entrance at NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
