Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballymonteen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballymonteen, County Cork: a 40m earthen ringfort on an east-facing slope, marked on Bateman’s 1716-1717 map. Its curving fence and steep scarp still shape the pasture, though overgrowth hides the northern edge. People may have lived there before the field fence took its place, but the earth keeps that much to itself.
Symbol for ringfort on Bateman map (1716-1717, no. 38) just off centre of townland to SE. In high pasture, on an E-facing slope. A platform (diam. c. 40m) defined by a curving field fence NNW-NNE and by a steep scarp (H 1.1m) NNE-WSW. The N portion of the possible rath is overgrown and consequently it was not possible to take accurate measurements in this area. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
