Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballycullane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Three earthen rings stand evenly spaced beneath the Ballycullane sky, marked on Bateman’s map in 1716 and still visible today. They are not fairy forts at all, but human ringforts built for defence, storage or residence in County Cork. The westmost ring survives on later surveys, while the others faded from official notice. Their symmetry suggests planning, not chance, and their silence preserves more than any monument could speak.
Symbols on Bateman map (1716-1717. no. 33) for three ringforts evenly spaced just S of N townland boundary; most westerly one (CO046-01601-) depicted on 1842 OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
