Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinvrokig

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballinvrokig, County Cork: an earthen ringfort, roughly 80m across, on the shoulder of an east-west ridge with wide views south, west and north. It has been levelled for pasture, yet a slight undulation still marks the circular space, as if the ground remembers the shape even when the wall has gone. People may have lived there, or kept stock, or simply drawn a line around a place they loved; the land kept the line longer than they did.
In pasture, on shoulder of E-W ridge, extensive view to S, W and N. Levelled, but slight undulation encloses roughly circular area (diam. c. 80m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
