Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinvarrig West

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are often earthen rings, not magical castles. In Ballinvarrig West, a circular enclosure about twenty-five metres across stood in pasture until ploughing and foot traffic softened it into low undulations. The name may preserve a forgotten warning, a child’s story, or a joke about the dead, but the earth still holds the shape of a place people once drew a line around.
In pasture. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m). Levelled; low undulations in field. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
