Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinlyny

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No fairy ever flew into Ballinlyny. A family lived there, raised the bank, split the circle in two, and left before the grass forgot them. The fairies came later, as they do everywhere humans stop answering. They claimed the vacancy.
In rough grazing, atop low crag in area of limestone outcropping. Circular area (40m E-W; 39m N-S) enclosed by earth-and-stone bank (int. H 0.75m; ext. H 0.4m) which is best preserved NW->ESE. Interior is bisected by low earth-and-stone bank on ESE-WNW axis, which fades out in places and stops 2m short of bank at ESE. Several areas of limestone outcrop in interior which is otherwise under pasture. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
