Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ardnanean

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Ardnanean in County Limerick once held a twenty-five-metre earthen ringfort, now erased from the marshy pasture. The fairy fort label suggests people believed the site belonged to unseen inhabitants rather than ordinary farmers. That belief may have protected the strange circle, or it may have warned everyone to leave the damp ground alone.
In pasture, on gentle SW-facing slope in low-lying marshy terrain. Monument, depicted as circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) on 1923 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. No trace of monument evident when inspected. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
