What is recorded here
An Luachair holds a large earthen ringfort on a steep slope above the Emlagh river, its bank still standing several metres high beside a wide shallow ditch. Inside, a smaller circular hut site remains on a slightly raised area, suggesting the fort contained more than an empty field. People may have lived there, watched the valley, or kept animals inside the broad earthwork before the meaning of the place faded.
Internal diam. 41.7m
Lisrananoge/Lios Ráth na nÓg: This circular univallate rath is located on a fairly steep SE facing slope overlooking the valley of the Emlagh river. It is enclosed by an earthen bank and fosse, the latter being c. 5m wide and .5m deep. The bank averages 3.3m in height externally and is up to 2m high internally. Its inner face is revetted with drystone masonry which stands to a maximum height of 1.6m. A short section of this facing at WSW appears to be stepped. The 4m wide gap at SE is probably the original entrance and the gaps at N and W are probably secondary features.
The N part of the interior appears to be slightly raised. Three depressions of unknown origin and a circular hut-site are located on this platform. The hut measures 4.3m N-S x 5m E-W internally and the wall is reduced to a bank of earth and stone, 1.5m wide and up to .85m high. The entrance faces NE and consists of a 1.2m wide break in the bank.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 502. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
